Exactly one week after taking control of Twitter, Elon Musk Fires 50% of the entire Twitter workforce.
This comes after a memo was sent out Thursday about how Twitter will be reducing headcounts.
While this memo seemed like a clear notice to all Twitter employees some took to Twitter today, surprised that they were locked out of their accounts and laptop.
This is not the only tweet that went public about the matter, a lot of other former Twitter employees spent their day speaking/ tweeting about the matter. This comes after Elon Musk tweeted that brands had begun pulling their advertisements, leading to a “massive earnings drop”
Musk confirmed the layoffs were due to cost cutting measures in a tweet. He also confirmed that all fired employees were offered 3 month of severance, which is more than legally required.
However, according to some internal sources (unconfirmed) it seems that the “entire” curation team across Twitter had been dismissed, Twitter’s curation team plays a key role in coverage of “civic integrity” events such as elections, breaking news and making sure users were receiving accurate information.
Elon then tweeted that Twitter’s commitment to content moderation remain absolutely unchanged.
A lot of employee have filed a lawsuit stating that they were given insufficient notice, but it’s highly unlikely that they will be able to get anywhere with the case as they were provided with a more than enough severance to give them enough time to find another job elsewhere.
This story is still developing, so stay tuned for more info.
